Tom James - Deacon

Tom James

Tom joined the Diaconate in 2008. He is married to Sue, and has quite an amazing testimony. Tom and Sue currently run Clever Cloggs, our Parent and Toddler group at Goldings, and are very involved in the life of the church.

Tom's favourite bible verse is strongly linked with his own testimony.
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners. Isaiah 61 : 1
Tom felt that God gave this verse to him just in time - he had been going through a particularly difficult time in his life, and felt frustrated and confused. His emotions were in turmoil, and Tom would agree he was certainly suffering from a broken-heart. Some years earlier he had been set free from his involement with the Jehovah's Witnesses and at that time felt a huge burden roll away from him, but he was still struggling with various issues in his life - particularly with drinking. Like many of us, Tom felt himself to be the worst possible Christian; wondering why he was always slipping back into his old ways...and then God gave him this verse...

Tom is fortunate enough to live in a place which backs onto a huge field, and often he walks across this field at all hours of the morning and night, just talking to the Lord. One day, feeling useless and alone, he got on his knees before God and just cried out for help. He grabbed his Bible and in desperation cried out, 'Lord, just speak to me!' Tom's Bible fell open at Isaiah 61 and the verse above. The words washed over him, comforting and surrounding him, giving him peace and encouragement. He knew then that Jesus would heal him from his broken heart and that freedom from drinking would be given to him. Tom says it was amazing the clarity that the Lord gave him. His drinking was all linked to his emotions...and the Lord was getting to the root of the problem.

Tom comes from a Romany Gipsy background and both he and Sue have been very influential in reaching out to this wonderful group of people. They have had the joy of seeing many people giving their lives to Jesus Christ too!

Tom is rejoicing in Jesus Christ - who sets the captives free and heals the broken hearted!
